Second resident of High Prairie care home dies from COVID-19

Another resident of the J.B. Wood continuing care facility in High Prairie has died from COVID-19, as the province added 218 new cases of the disease to begin the month of May.

The fatality was one of three announced deaths for May 1 by chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, bringing the provincial death toll to 92. All of Friday’s fatalities were identified at continuing care facilities where outbreaks had been reported.

As of Friday, 580 cases of COVID-19 have been identified in continuing care facilities, while 64 residents of such facilities have now died.

The resident at J.B. Wood is the second from that long-term care facility to pass away from the novel coronavirus, and the third in the Big Lakes County area. Fifteen residents of Northern Alberta have now died from COVID-19.

215 cases of COVID-19 have now been identified in the North Zone as of May 1, an increase of four from Thursday. 5,573 cases have been identified in Alberta as of Friday.

• M.D. of Smoky River: 65 cases (21 active, 34 recovered, ten deaths)
• Big Lakes County: 36 cases (15 active, 18 recovered, three deaths)
• M.D. of Lesser Slave River: Five cases (One active, four recovered)
• Northern Sunrise County: Three cases (All recovered)
• M.D. of Peace: Seven cases (All recovered)
• Clear Hills County: One case (Fatal)

The province completed 244 more tests for Northern Alberta residents over the last 24 hours, meaning 11,249 North Zone residents have been tested for COVID-19. 145,420 people have been tested province wide.

Testing also confirmed 198 more people in Alberta have recovered from COVID-19 over the last 24 hours, meaning 2,359 people (42% of all confirmed cases in Alberta) have now recovered from the disease.

As of May 1, 86 individuals are in hospital across Alberta with COVID-19, 21 of which are in Intensive Care.
