Grande Prairie golf courses prepare to open for 2020 season

May 4, 2020 | 12:20 PM

With golf courses across Alberta being given the green light to open up for the 2020 golf season, courses in Grande Prairie are gradually opening up as final touches are being made to adjust to new regulations amid COVID-19.

Courses were given the go-ahead to open this past weekend by the province, but regulations that keep two metres physical distancing and the elimination of high-touch areas need to be in place.

Some ways area courses are doing that are as follows:

  • Spaced out tee times to follow social distancing practicing.
  • Raised cups on holes and not being allowed to touch or move flag sticks.
  • Only one golf cart per person (unless you live in the same household as your playing partner).
  • Removal of rakes and benches.
  • Keeping bars or restaurant services closed.
  • Booking of tee times must occur online.
  • Prepayments for buckets at driving ranges.
  • Rental pull carts and rental clubs not being available for use.

Bear Creek Golf Club became the first course in the city to open its doors. The club opened up on May 2 with only nine holes that are playable. Some of the holes are still getting ready for the season and should be ready within the next week or two. Tee times can be booked on their website.

The Grande Prairie Golf and Country Club has set May 9 as their day to open. All holes will be playable and social distancing rules will be in place. All bookings must happen on the club’s website.

As of Monday morning, bookings were opened up to members of the course, and tee times were booked up until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Members get a four to five day advantage period to book tee times compared to the general public.

The Dunes Golf and Winter Club has not announced an opening date for the 2020 season. They tell EverythingGP that they’re expected to announce an opening date sometime later this week.
