Mayor to write letter to Premier in support of region-by-region relaunch

May 4, 2020 | 9:59 PM

Grande Prairie city council has directed the mayor to write to Premier Jason Kenney about opening the region in the coming weeks and months.

Last week, Premier Kenney announced and detailed the province’s planned economic relaunch strategy. The strategy is to go in phases and includes the potential for some businesses to re-open as early as May 14.

Mayor Bill Given says the intent of the letter is to show support for a region-by-region approach to relaunching and economic recovery.

“The local Grande Prairie area, meaning the City and County, have a relatively low number of cases, and while we know that that doesn’t mean that there will not be more cases in the future or that there isn’t a risk of future outbreaks, it does mean that we are in a much different place than many other mid-sized cities across the province.”

Given says their intent is not to immediately open everything all at once.

“I think everybody that I’ve spoken to, and certainly everyone on council, appreciate the fact that this is still a public health hazard and emergency and will be for some time. That being the case, we do need to find someway to allow people to move forward with their lives, with business.”

He says they will be doing what they can to support businesses in the region throughout the relaunch, and will still need to work on plans to reopen City buildings and facilities.
