May 5, 2020 | 3:24 PM

The Government of Alberta announced Tuesday that as part of its $1.9 billion accelerated capital maintenance and renewal (CMR) funding, the Town of Peace River will see $12.7 million injected into six CMR projects. This will keep 71 Albertans in the area working.

Four of the six CMR projects listed by the provincial government are at the Peace River Correctional Centre, which will go to help the following projects:

  • Upgrading the correctional centre’s main building heating system, security systems, and replacing exterior concrete at entrances.
  • Replacing the vocation shop roof, connecting the correctional centre’s water system to the Town of Peace River’s system.
  • Replacing the provincial building’s management control system, window glass, gaskets and caulking,
  • Modernizing the court houses elevator components to enhance barrier-free access and enhancing the court houses fire system.

Also included in the announcement is funding for the $800,000 project at the court house to modernize elevator components that will enhance barrier-free access. Funding to the tune of $219,000 has also been doled out to enhance the fire safety system on the court house, as well.

In a statement, MLA for Peace River Dan Williams said this investment from the provincial government is important for Peace River.

“We’re keeping local companies operating and people working at a difficult time. Continued investment in needed infrastructure projects is critical to supporting the local economy as we rebuild Alberta after the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. We’re keeping our commitment to focus on jobs and the economy.”

Minister of Infrastructure, Prasad Panda says this investment will help the town tackle the COVID-19 recession.

“Taking care of our provincial assets is important at the best of times, but never has it been so critical at a local level. We’re ensuring much-needed jobs and economic benefits are being pumped directly into Alberta’s smaller communities.”

Construction work on some of these projects are already well underway.
