2019 Bear Lake Growing Project wraps up after winter-long delay

Five combines picked up the 130 acres of canola in three hours on Wednesday after it had to stay out all winter.

Money from selling the canola will be donated to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

Albrecht Scheidegger donated the use of a field near Mercer Hill.

He says the crop came through winter fairly well, but the yield is down a bit.

“We’re sending samples out, so we’ll find out what it is. It’s kind of all different. A lot of it has been coming off as Number 1, but I’m not sure on this field.”

Scheidegger says it was good for all the volunteers to get the harvesting for the Growing Project done quickly.

He adds this year’s project will be a field seeded to CPS wheat.

Scheidegger says Thursday’s rain will set back seeding and combining a few days for some people.

“With all the moisture (we will) definitely be waiting three-four days for the nice weather to get anything happening on the fields again.”

He adds he had just started seeding Tuesday and still has 700 acres of his own standing canola to combine.
