May 19, 2020 | 4:22 PM

A High Prairie man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a death at a Slave Lake home on Sunday morning.

Slave Lake RCMP say they were called to the residence at around 5:30 a.m. on May 17, on reports of a suspicious death from what were believed to be stab wounds. The Major Crimes Unit then took charge of the investigation, with help from the RCMP Police Dog Services and the Forensic Identification Section.

As a result of the investigation, 32-year-old Vernon Wayne Laboucan has now been charged with second degree murder in connection with the death of 34-year-old Christopher Valiquette of Swan River First Nation.

Laboucan is to appear in Slave Lake Provincial Court, via closed circuit television, on Wednesday, May 20. An autopsy on the victim is scheduled for Thursday, May 21 in Edmonton.
