Wet, Cold week ahead

Up to 40 mm of rain possible by Saturday in Grande Prairie

The Grande Prairie area is set to see plenty of wet weather through the rest of the week, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Meteorologist Eric Dykes says starting Wednesday, the Peace Region and the rest of Alberta will start to see heavy amounts of rain.

“We’re looking at possibly upwards of around 15-25 mm worth of rain for Peace River, but for Grande Prairie and a little bit further south it might be a little bit more,” said Dykes.

“The models are indicating something in and around 25-40 mm worth of rain over this Wednesday to Saturday period with this system.”

Dykes says the system bringing all the rain is coming from Montana and will slowly bring the rain over Alberta starting Tuesday night in the southern part of the province, before working its way north.

With all that rain, the forecast is also calling for temperatures to stay in the single digits for the end of the work week. As of Tuesday afternoon, Thursday is calling for a high of just nine degrees, while Friday is slated to only get up to seven degrees.

Dykes says he would be remiss to not mention that those cooler temperatures bring with it a chance of wet snow, especially in the overnight and early morning hours of the week.

“Not to say that is a certainty, but that rain could change over, especially in the early morning hours both on Thursday morning and Friday morning.”

Dykes says the system should begin to clear up late Saturday, before making way for more seasonal temperatures in the high teens starting on Sunday.

“This week will be the wet week and the cold week, and next week is shaping up to be much drier and sunnier.”
