City Council adds Revolution Place renovations to 2020 Capital Budget

May 20, 2020 | 1:10 PM

The City has added several new capital projects to its budget.

At Tuesday’s regular Council meeting, projects including upgrades and renovations to Revolution Place and the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion 35th Anniversary Enhancements were approved and added to the 2020 Capital Budget. A discussion was had and an amendment was moved, but not approved, to remove the Revolution Place and Ernie Radbourne Pavilion from the list.

“In the end, the Council decision was to really stay the course, and to allot this money,” said Mayor Bill Given. “And we had confidence in doing that because Administration was able to advise us that they were clear that Council wanted to have a discussion about a larger vision for Revolution Place, prior to spending any of the funds that were budgeted.”

Previously, at a Council Committee of the Whole meeting last week, the Committee voted to have Council approve new capital projects totaling $13.475-million. Council also voted to have administration bring forward a more comprehensive vision for Revolution Place.

The new projects for Revolution Place included 25 Year Anniversary Enhancements, totaling $125,000, and the City’s Revolution Place Vision, which would cost $419,000. The Ernie Radbourne 35 Anniversary Enhancements total $100,000.

Last week, the Grande Prairie Storm also sent a letter to Council, inquiring about various upgrades and changes to Revolution Place. No decisions were made regarding the letter.

Much of the funding identified came from the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) and the Federal Gas Tax (FGT). The City would have to return the money to both the provincial and federal governments if it is not allocated.

There is no specific timeline announced for the projects.
