2020 property tax notices in the mail for County residents

May 21, 2020 | 11:47 AM

Approximately 20,000 property owners in the County of Grande Prairie will be receiving their 2020 property tax notices in the mail in the coming days.

Along with tax notices, the County has sent out information on reading the notice, how the county funds its budget, how property values are assessed, and County services and programs funded by municipal property taxes.

Property owners are encouraged to pay their taxes by the June 30 deadline, though penalties for late payments will be waived until October 30, 2020.

“The County understands the hardships and challenges faced by many living and working in our area due to the COVID-19 pandemic and current economic conditions, which may affect their ability to pay on time,” said Reeve Leanne Beaupre in a statement. “This is why Council chose to waive late penalties for payments made after June 30 until October 30.”

Property taxes can be payed online with a credit card, through a bank, or by a cheque postmarked no later than June 30, 2020.

As of Monday, May 25, the County’s Administration Building will be open from 8:30 a.m. to noon, and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday for in-person tax payments. The County asks that those paying in person follow safety regulations that include:

  • A limit of five patrons at a time in the front reception of the Administration Building
  • Use the provided hand sanitizer upon entering and exiting the building
  • Maintain a two metres physical distance from others
  • Do not enter the building if you have traveled outside of Canada in the last 14 days, or are experiencing flu-like symptoms

Property owners will also have the option to enroll in the Tax Installment Payment Plan (TIPP), and divide their tax payments into six monthly payments throughout 2020. Those enrolled in TIPP can also make an initial payment, then pay the remaining balance off in the following six months. To apply for TIPP, contact Assessment Services at taxes@countygp.ab.ca or call 780-513-3952.

Payments received after October 30 will be subjected to a 12 per cent penalty, unless TIPP is in place.

Those who have recently purchased property in the County of Grande Prairie are also asked to contact the County tax office immediately. New owners are asked to email taxes@countygp.ab.ca or contact the County Administration Office at 780-539-9722.

Questions regarding tax notices should be directed to the County’s Assessment Services at 780-513-3952.
