B.C. joins Alberta, Saskatchewan in barring out-of-province access to provincial campgrounds

Outdoor enthusiasts in Western Canada will have be camping closer to home this season – at least until further notice.

Following similar decisions made by the Alberta and Saskatchewan governments, British Columbia has become the latest province to restrict its provincial parks to its own residents.

In an online statement, B.C. Parks says it’s giving B.C. residents priority in support of staying local and avoiding unnecessary travel.

It says non-B.C. residents with existing reservations should contact the call centre by June 15th to receive a full refund.

“New reservations made after May 25th found to be made by non-BC residents will be subject to immediate cancellation without refund,” reads a statement from Discover Camping, the online reservation service for B.C. Parks.

The Alberta government announced a similar policy last week to limit access to provincial park camp sites to Alberta residents only.

Saskatchewan has the same rule that is to go into effect on June 1st.

Parks Canada has said campgrounds in national parks will remain closed until at least June 21st.
