Fire ban lifted

Alberta Wildfire downgrades fire ban to advisory in Forest Protection Area

May 26, 2020 | 11:49 AM

Alberta Wildfire says that due to recent rain in many parts of the province, the fire ban in the Forest Protection Area has been downgraded to a fire advisory.

With the drop to an advisory, wood campfires on public and private land, as well as in provincial campgrounds are permitted. All campfires must be within an engineered campfire ring to ensure safe use.

Other permitted uses during the fire advisory include the use of charcoal briquette barbecues, propane and natural gas appliances, catalytic and infrared heaters and burning with a valid permit.

Alberta Wildfire says burning without a permit, fireworks and exploding targets and unattended campfires are prohibited.

They also add that full restrictions can be brought back at any time, and they will address the wildfire risk area-by-area on a daily basis.

“We expect this fire advisory to reduce the number of human-caused wildfires in Alberta, while allowing Albertans to enjoy outdoor activities as much as possible.”

Fires in permanent recreational fire pits (with a permit) within the County of Grande Prairie are allowed, though the County still has a fire ban in place. Gas barbecues and propane fire pits are also allowed by the County during the fire ban.

Backyard fire pits with a permit are also allowed in the City of Grande Prairie.
