Resident of High Prairie continuing care home dies from COVID-19

Alberta Health says another resident from the J.B. Wood continuing care facility in High Prairie has died from COVID-19, as 22 new cases were identified across Alberta for May 26.

The fatality was identified by Alberta Health to EverythingGP as a woman in her 80’s, becoming the 16th resident of the North Zone to die from COVID-19. A total of 139 people in Alberta have died as of Tuesday.

There are now 714 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta, with 19 of those cases being in Northern Alberta. There are now 6,048 people that have recovered, 200 of which come from the North Zone.

Updated case totals in the Peace Region as of May 26 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: Six cases (Three active, three recovered)
  • County of Grande Prairie: Six cases (Two active, four recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: Two cases (One active, one recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 67 cases (Three active, 55 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 36 cases (One active, 32 recovered, three deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: Five cases (All recovered)
  • Northern Sunrise County: Three cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: Seven cases (Six recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: One case (Fatal)
  • County of Northern Lights: One case (Recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 33 cases (Five active, 28 recovered)

The number of hospitalizations remained at 45 for May 26. Five of those individuals admitted to hospital are in ICU at this time.

A total of 2,982 tests have been processed at the provincial lab over the last 24 hours. There have now been 221,173 people tested across Alberta, 16,815 of which are Northern Alberta residents.
