REGULATORY CHANGES TO HOME-BASED FOODS

Alberta eases restrictions on sale of home-prepared foods

May 28, 2020 | 5:20 PM

EDMONTON – The Alberta government is changing provincial regulations to allow for sale of low-risk, home-prepared foods without the need for permits or inspections.

Foods such as baked goods, jams, candies and pickled products as well as cereals are some of those which will now be exempt from requiring provincial food-handling permits or inspections prior to sale.

High-risk foods such as meat, poultry and raw milk will continue to be regulated.

The province says the move will allow for easier access for consumers at events such as farmers’ markets. However, there will be new labeling requirements to allow for consumers to make informed choices.

“This regulatory change maintains our standards for food safety, supports Alberta entrepreneurs, adds new jobs and benefits the economy by giving Albertans new opportunities to buy locally produced foods. It also makes it easier than ever to turn your passion into a home business,” says Health Minister Tyler Shandro.
