COVID-19 Update

One new COVID-19 case, one more recovery in Grande Prairie

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Alberta topped 7,000 on Sunday as the province added 18 new cases to close out the month of May.

Total cases hit 7,010 on May 31, with 584 of those cases considered active. 6,283 of those cases are considered recovered while 143 people have died. There were no new deaths reported over the last 24 hours.

In the City of Grande Prairie, there was one new case reported, while one more case is considered recovered. There are now 10 active cases in the City with four cases considered recovered.

There have been three organizations in Grande Prairie that have identified publicly a positive case of COVID-19 within their teams, including Ramona’s Pizza (May 22), the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre (May 23) and Odyssey House (May 30).

Unless identified publicly by the infected individual or by an affected business, or if the case is included in an identified outbreak site in Alberta, details on specific cases are not released by Alberta Health or Alberta Health Services.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of May 31 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 14 cases (Ten active, four recovered)
  • County of Grande Prairie: Six cases (Two active, four recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: Two cases (One active, one recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 68 cases (Three active, 55 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 36 cases (One active, 31 recovered, four deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: Five cases (All recovered)
  • Northern Sunrise County: Three cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: Seven cases (Six recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: One case (Fatal)
  • County of Northern Lights: One case (Recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 33 cases (Four active, 29 recovered)

The number of hospitalizations in Alberta dropped by one from Saturday to 52, with six of those patients being in ICU. There are four people in the North Zone in hospital due to COVID-19 as of Sunday.

There were 3,769 tests completed in the last 24 hours at the provincial lab, meaning 232,702 Albertans have been tested as of May 31. There have been 18,028 people tested in the North Zone.
