Grande Prairie residents now able to report certain crimes online

Jun 1, 2020 | 12:37 PM

The Grande Prairie RCMP detachment will now be part of the first phase of an online crime reporting pilot project with the Alberta RCMP.

Residents can now report select crimes online, and the RCMP says all reports will be followed up with a phone call from a police officer within five business days.

Crimes that can now be reported online include:

  • Damage/mischief to property under $5,000
  • Theft of bicycle under $5,000
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Theft from vehicle under $5,000
  • Lost property

The RCMP says that the crimes reported must also follow certain conditions in order to be reported using the new online tool, including having no witnesses or suspects, item(s) lost or stolen must cost less than $5,000, vandalized property will cost less than $5,000 to repair, and that there are no items lost or stolen that involve personal identity, firearms, license plates or decals.

The pilot project’s goal is to ensure that the public can report these types of crime in a way that is convenient and available for them, as well as to see that all crime is reported no matter the size. The RCMP says that this will give accurate crime data and enable them to use their resources appropriately where they are needed the most.

The first phase also includes Airdrie and Red Deer detachments. Phase two will be launched on June 8, and includes Banff, Cold Lake and Strathcona County. A full launch of the online crime reporting tool will go across Alberta RCMP jurisdictions on June 15.
