Mayor happy to see Grande Prairie become part of RCMP’s new online reporting project

The Grande Prairie RCMP detachment will now be part of the first phase of an online crime reporting pilot program with the Alberta RCMP.

Crimes that can now be reported online include damage/mischief to property under $5,000, theft of bicycle under $5,000, theft under $5,000, theft from vehicle under $5,000, and lost property

Last December, the Mayor of Grande Prairie Bill Given, says he was directed to send a letter on behalf of Council advocating to ‘K’ division for Grande Prairie to be part of a pilot project like this.

“We also brought this straight to the Minister of Justice and Solicitor General when we had a chance to have a face to face meeting with him some months ago, so it’s great to see that number one, our working relationship with the RCMP is paying off, and that our advocacy efforts are really helping to ensure that our voice is heard to the benefit of Grande Prairie residents.”

He says while he believes all crimes should be reported, these types of crimes would require officers to do more paperwork and administrative duties, and this will make it easier for residents and the RCMP.

“Not all crimes need a uniformed officer with a side arm at your doorstep. Some of these types of instances can simply be reported, and insurance can get what they need and citizens can go about their lives, and we can make sure that we keep those uniformed officers for the more high-profile crimes and the things that are really impactful with respect to community safety.”

Given says that now Grande Prairie is among the first for the online reporting tool, as well as the Collision Reporting Centre, something he says took about five years of advocacy for.

“Advocacy on this was much shorter. I think it really speaks to a modernizing of the RCMP, and a recognition that the force needs to change in order to continue to serve their local communities effectively, and in my mind, that’s a great outcome.”

This first phase also includes the Airdrie and Red Deer detachments. Phase two will be launched on June 8, and includes Banff, Cold Lake and Strathcona County. A full launch of the online crime reporting tool will go across Alberta RCMP jurisdictions on June 15.
