Summer camp registration opens June 4 in Grande Prairie

Jun 2, 2020 | 4:53 PM

The City of Grande Prairie will begin accepting registrations for summer camps starting on June 4.

Camps for the 2020 season will offer full day, week long camps and will be available at Ernie Radbourne Pavilion, Grande Prairie Museum and South Bear Creek Pavilion.

With the threat of COVID-19 still around, the Government of Alberta has implemented new guidelines and procedures to protect the health and safety of staff, children and families participating in the camps.

Some of these protocols include:

  • Daily symptom screening
  • Revised physical distancing activities.
  • Increased cleaning and disinfecting each day.
  • Reduced number of participants.

With that, Hayley Kramps, the Recreation Events and Programming Supervisor for the City of Grande Prairie says camps will look a little different this year.

“Some of the physical distancing activities could include different science experiments. We are going to be staying away from your typical sports programs just because of the shared equipment, so we’ll be looking into more activities such as jump rope and things like that.”

Kramps says there will be thermometers on-site, but it will be up to parents to check their kids temperatures before they are able to participate in the camp for the day.

“We will have thermometers at each location, but we physically will not be taking temperatures unless prompted. The daily screening is to remind participants that they are not to enter the program if they have any of those symptoms. We are checking for things such as a cough, a fever, a runny nose, the big COVID(-19) symptoms that might lead us to believe that they might be symptomatic.”

Summer camps will be allowed to open up on July 6. Those interested in reading about what camps are available can do so here.
