Woman sentenced to 8 1/2 years in toddler’s death

EDMONTON – An Edmonton judge says a woman convicted of manslaughter in the death of a 19-month-old boy three years ago says she spent hours finding a place to dump the boy, dead or alive.

Tasha-Lee Mack sobbed as she was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for her role in the death of Anthony Joseph Raine, who was found dead outside Good Shepherd Anglican Church in April of 2017.

Justice Rob Graesser says while there was no evidence Mack struck Anthony, she consciously decided not to seek medical advice.

Prior to being sentenced, Mack spoke to the court for at least 20 minutes, saying she understood what she did was wrong, and describing the situation as an out of body experience that she can’t explain.

In her victim impact statement, Anthony’s mother, Dalyce Raine told the court she doesn’t think she’ll ever be able to forgive the people responsible for her son’s death.

Anthony’s father, Joey Crier, was found guilty of manslaughter in a separate trial, but has yet to be sentenced.

Mack’s sentence was reduced by a year due to difficult conditions in the remand centre.

She also received credit for time served, meaning she has five years left in her sentence.
