Four arrested following firearms complaint in Cadotte Lake

Jun 8, 2020 | 2:27 PM

Four people have been arrested and charged after an incident involving assault, guns pointed, a pursuit and firearms seized in Cadotte Lake.

RCMP say the incident began after an assault of one man and an attempt to steal his truck at approximately 1:00 a.m. on June 6. They say the assault and attempted theft escalated to RCMP being called.

At 6:43 a.m., RCMP responded to a complaint that people in two red vehicles at a residence were pointing guns at each other.

While the RCMP were on their way to the scene, one of the vehicles left. When they arrived, they found a red Ford Fusion and conducted a high-risk traffic stop. Two men were found in the vehicle and were arrested.

The Fusion was then searched, and multiple knives, an axe, ammunition, and drug paraphernalia were seized. A 30/30 lever action rifle was seized from outside the vehicle.

Information from witnesses informed police that the second vehicle involved was a red Charger. Other responding officers located the suspect Charger traveling west on Highway 2 towards Peace River. A traffic stop was initiated, and the vehicle fled. A high-speed pursuit followed throughout the Peace River region. Two tire deflation devices were deployed successfully, and the vehicle eventually came to a stop on Highway 986 near Simon Lake.

The male driver and female passenger were arrested, and a search of the vehicle was then done. An airsoft gun and a range of paraphernalia were seized.

Forty-one-year-old Duane Charles Merrier, 35-year-old Christopher Dale Laboucan, 31-year-old Cody Loss Letendre and 30-year-old Bobby Fawn Auger are now facing charges.

Merrier is charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle and possession of property obtained by crime.

Laboucan is facing charges of pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Letendre is charged with assault, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer, using a firearm in the commission of an offence and one charge under the Traffic Safety Act.

Auger is charged with nine counts of failure to comply with release order conditions.

Marrier and Laboucan have been released on conditions, and are scheduled to appear in Peace River Provincial Court on July 20.

Letendre was remanded, and Auger’s bail hearing was adjourned. Both have a court appearance scheduled for June 8.

No one was injured in relation to the guns, while one male sustained injuries from the earlier assault and attempt to steal his vehicle.
