As part of the Province of Alberta’s efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Albertan’s can now access 20 million free, non-medical face masks for free at A&W, McDonalds and Tim Hortons drive-thrus.

Each person that passes through a drive-thru can pick receive up to four non-medical masks. The masks are free for anyone and no purchase is necessary.

Albertan’s are encouraged to pick up masks for family members and friends. Masks are being distributed via the honour system and Albertan’s are asked to respect the limit of one package per person.

In a statement, the Minister of Health, Tyler Shandro said, this program is the only of it’s kind in the country.

“We’re proud to be the first province in Canada to support residents with free masks for use in situations where physical distancing may not be possible. Thank you to our restaurant partners, franchise owners and staff members, who are volunteering their time and effort to distribute these masks.”

Masks have also been provided to First Nations communities, Metis Settlements and local agencies. Rural and remote communities that don’t have access to a restaurant drive-thru are developing their own distribution plans.

Mask use in the province is not mandatory, but they are recommended when you cannot keep a two-meter distance between someone else.
