The UFA Rural Communities Foundation is continuing its $100,000 Community Grant Program in 2020.

Back in 2019, the UFA Rural Communities Foundation announced a $500,000 commitment over the next five years to help rural communities build projects.

Groups that are eligible for funding include registered charities, registered non-profit organizations and community service co-operatives.

Harvey Hagman is the Rural Communities Foundation (RCF) board chair and says that this program is important not just for farmers, but the community as a whole.

“In the last year when we did our first grant program, we had over 206 applications and we awarded three prizes in the grant and it definitely helps small and rural Alberta communities. There seems to be a big demand for it at this time.”

Last year, the money awarded went to projects in Paradise Valley, Delia and Onoway.

Hagman says that once these projects are complete, they will play a large role in the community.

“One of our winners last year, (in Onoway) plans to build a machine shop that will serve to expand its existing Heritage Village Museum to include large farm machinery displays designed to inform visitors about the history of farming in that community.”

“A smaller prize went to Paradise Valley, which will see some of its buildings restored to historic standards, so it’s kind of an add on to their facility.”

Those interested in applying for the program can submit applications between June 12 and August 31. The winners are then chosen by a committee in October during Co-operative Week.

Groups interested in applying must be located within 200 kilometers of a UFA location and the project must be completed within two years.

Applications can be filled out by heading to their website.
