Jun 14, 2020 | 3:35 PM

The Clear Hills County area saw a sharp increase in the number of active cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, while the City of Grande Prairie saw two more cases recover for June 14.

There were nine new cases identified in Clear Hills County, which includes the communities of Hines Creek, Worsley and Cleardale and sports a population of just under 3,000 people. The area now has 10 active cases identified by Alberta Heath.

With that increase, Clear Hills County has been added to the health authority’s “watchlist” as part of Stage 2 of its relaunch, which means the COVID-19 situation in the area is being closely monitored.

“The province is monitoring the risk and discussing with local government(s) and other community leaders the possible need for additional health measures,” reads a description from Alberta Health.

At this time there are no additional measures being implemented. More details on the province’s watchlist can be found here.

Alberta Health spokesperson Tom McMillan says they and Alberta Health Services are continuing to investigate for common links or sources that may have caused the sharp increase in cases, but at this time could not identify a specific source.

Those nine cases were part of the 50 new cases reported in Alberta for June 14. An updated case total among Peace Region municipalities is as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 18 cases (Three active, 15 recovered)
  • County of Grande Prairie: Seven cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: Three cases (All recovered)

There are now 422 active cases in Alberta, with 6,861 cases considered recovered.

In Alberta there are now 46 people in hospital with COVID-19, seven of who are in ICU. Three people from the North Zone are in hospital as of Sunday.
