City to target between a zero and 2.5 per cent property tax increase for 2021

Jun 15, 2020 | 6:54 PM

Grande Prairie City Council has voted to have City Administration target between a zero and 2.5 per cent increase in property taxes for the 2021 budget.

Mayor Bill Given says the intent of the target is to give guidance as the budget is developed in the coming year.

“Administration will take this information as they go through and look at the operational side of the City, the Capital Budget for 2021, and start to build some scenarios for Council to consider in November of this year.”

He says that it is important to be aware that there is, and there will continue to be inflation impacting the City.

“Anything below the rate of inflation is essentially a cut, and it’s up to Council in the fall to decide whether the range of services the City provides are important to the community or not, if something is not important to the community and not valuable to the community, then there’s no reason for the City to deliver it.”

With the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Given says the 2021 budget may not be the toughest one he has seen, but it does hold uncertainty.

“My hope would be that by the time Council is making budget decisions in November of this year, that all of us will have a clearer picture of what the future holds and how our local and national and global economy are doing.”
