Drive-in movie theatre moving out to Evergreen Park

Jun 15, 2020 | 9:51 AM

The Grande Sunset Theatre is moving the outdoor silver screen to Evergreen Park.

In a Facebook post Monday morning, organizers for the drive-in theatre announced they will be moving their Friday and Saturday night showings from the parking lot at Bullets and Broadheads to the larger space out at Evergreen Park.

“What started off as a small short term community project, has now blossomed into something that has been desired in Grande Prairie for over 40 years… the return of a Drive In Movie Theatre,” reads the post from the theatre.

The first showing out at Evergreen Park is scheduled for June 26, with a plan to continue showing movies nights into the fall season.

With the move to Evergreen Park happening, the theatre will now be able to hold around 300 vehicles for a movie, compared to the under 100 that was held at the Bullets and Broadheads parking lot.

Robin Coward, the owner of Bullets and Broadheads and one of the main organizers for the Grande Sunset Theatre, says the move to Evergreen Park will help ensure a much better viewing experience for guests, as well as the potential to raise more money for charity.

All proceeds for the showings so far have gone to various local charities in the Grande Prairie area.

“One of the things about moving out there is that we could have more people parking, which means more money for the charities that we are trying to support in Grande Prairie. One of the cool things about moving out there is that we’ve been trying to get a deal with some of these movie distributors to get more current movies and more of the classics. So, we’ll be able to have a better selection of movies for people to view.”

Ticket prices to view a movie at the Grande Sunset Theatre are expected to remain the same as Bullet and Broadheads, at around $30 per vehicle.

Coward says that with the move to the new location, they are also looking at a way to deliver concession items to guests, so they can get a full movie theatre experience.

“We are actually looking to get some concession items added to the ‘carts’ for people when they order their tickets, they can also their concession right then and we’ll give it to them right when they pull into the parking lot.”

Coward tells EverythingGP that the screen at the theatre will be much larger than the screen at Bullets and Broadheads and will be located on the southside of the parking lot at Evergreen Park. The screen is currently in the process of being built.

At this point there is no date for when tickets will go on-sale to the public or what movies the theatre will be showing. With the days getting longer in Grande Prairie, Coward said that the movies will likely begin after 10:00 p.m. but with a brand-new screen, the movie might be able to start earlier.

More details about the drive-in theatre at Evergreen Park will be provided when available on the Grande Sunset Theatre’s Facebook page.
