Biologists criticize Alberta’s monitoring suspension, lack of consultation

EDMONTON – The head of Alberta’s society of professional biologists is taking issue with the province’s suspension of environmental monitoring over COVID-19 fears.

Jay White says most of that work could have been done safely if the government had consulted with biologists first.

Alberta’s chief scientist says he wasn’t approached either before many land, air and water-monitoring requirements in the province’s oil and gas industry were put on hold.

Fred Wrona says he doesn’t think the decision will hurt Alberta’s long-term efforts to track environmental changes.

But he adds the government should have consulted with others before making the move.

First Nations and environmental groups have protested loudly.

There’s been a request to allow an appeal and Ottawa has been asked to step in.

Government spokespeople have said the monitoring suspensions were needed to keep people safe and that it may come off as early as August 15th.
