COVID-19 UPDATE

Grande Prairie down to one active case of COVID-19

The City of Grande Prairie now has just one active case of COVID-19 according to Alberta Health, as there were 46 new cases of COVID-19 added in Alberta Friday.

With those new cases, the number of active cases topped 500 in Alberta for June 19, as there are now 512 active cases, while 6,961 people have recovered.

The steady increase in the number of active cases in the province has been on-going since June 5. Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, notes that on June 5, Alberta had 339 active cases. Two weeks later, that number has increased by 173.

Dr. Hinshaw says that rise is not surprising, especially since Stage 2 of the province’s relaunch is now one week old. However, she does note that the rate of hospitalization remains low, and has in fact slighty decreased over the past two weeks. As of Friday, 39 people were in hospital with six in ICU.

On top of that, she notes there is a significant decrease in the number of cases in continuing care facilities as of June 19. As of Friday, there are only 26 active cases in continuing care homes in Alberta.

“However, there are other trends which remind us that we have to remain vigilant to prevent future outbreaks of COVID-19. We are continuing to identify cases in all age groups,” said Hinshaw. “The locations of our new cases have shifted largely from continuing care environments, to community settings such as workplaces and large gatherings, such as funerals.”

She adds the pandemic is far from over, and Albertans should not get complacent when it comes to COVID-19.

“It means that the virus is still here and it isn’t going anywhere. It also means that, even if we are feeling healthy and symptom-free, we all need to continue operating as though we could spread the virus to others and could catch it from those around us.”

Update case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of end of day June 18 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 18 cases (One active, 17 recovered)
  • County of Grande Prairie: Seven cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: Three cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 67 cases (57 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 40 cases (35 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: Five cases (All recovered)
  • Northern Sunrise County: Four cases (One active, three recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: Six cases (All recovered)
  • Clear Hills County: Ten cases (All active)
  • County of Northern Lights: Zero cases
  • Mackenzie County: 33 cases (All recovered)

No additional deaths were reported for June 19, keeping the number of fatalities attributed to COVID-19 at 152 in Alberta.

There are now 39 people in hospital as of Friday, with six in ICU. Three people remain in hospital in northern Alberta with COVID-19, while one is in intensive care.

The provincial lab has processed nearly 9,000 tests over the last 24 hours, meaning there have now been 373,724 tests administered on 332,766 people. 25,850 people from northern Alberta have been tested as of Friday.
