The Alberta government announced $200 million in funding for local transportation infrastructure and waterworks projects that Premier Jason Kenney said will get thousands of people back to work.

Kenney said the money includes a further $50 million for the Strategic Infrastructure Investment Program so small and rural municipalities can maintain and improve local roads and bridges, community airports and other local priorities. He said that will create 500 jobs.

In total there are 69 new local transportation infrastructure projects.

Kenney said $150 million will be invested in 54 public waterworks projects to create about 1,300 jobs. Included in that is $13 million to support a water tie-in program for the Ermineskin Cree Nation to the Ponoka regional water pipeline.

Some projects will begin this week, said Kenney..

Transportation Minister Ric McIver said this is the next step in Alberta’s economic recovery.

“We know that these are smart investments because municipalities themselves have looked at their priority lists and told us what projects are most critical to each of their communities,” he said.

McIver added the link between infrastructure and investment is clear.

“You can’t have one without the other. Local roads and bridges, resource roads, community airports and water and wastewater treatment are vital to Alberta’s rural communities.”
