Alberta’s top baby names in 2019 have been released.

Noah came in as the top name for boys, while Olivia continued to be the top name for girls for the sixth year in a row.

Minister of Service Alberta, Nate Glubish, presented the top baby names Monday morning with his nine-month-old, Max.

“My family is one of thousands who happily, and perhaps a bit nervously, welcomed a baby in 2019, and Max is one of 51,598 babies who were born in this province.”

There were 26,328 boys and 25,270 girls born in 2019, and 13,718 names recorded.

“One of the biggest decisions that new parents make, and one of the most memorable moments, is choosing a name of their child,” Said Glubish. “It’s a major decision that effects a child for the entirety of his or her life, but it’s also fun and exciting.”

The name Hannah reappeared in the top ten baby girl names for the first time since 2014, and the name Logan fell to 12th place for boys’ names after being in the top five for both 2018 and 2017.

The province highlighted that some parents have begun adopting names from popular culture, and names such as Khaleesi and Sansa (Game of Thrones), Loki and Rogue (Marvel) have gained popularity in the last few years.

Names referencing Greek and Roman Mythology have also become more popular, including Artemis, Apollo, Persephone, Juno, Mars, and Venus.

Names referring to geographic locations such as Arizona, Memphis, and Salem have also begun popping up.

“We can see from our birth registration numbers that Alberta remains a vibrant place to raise a family. I’m looking forward to continuing the work that we’re doing to make this province the best that it can be, (a) strong Alberta for all of us, and for our future generations.”
