Cineplex to re-open six Alberta theatres Friday

Jun 24, 2020 | 10:02 AM

Cineplex has announced that six of their theatres across Alberta will re-open Friday, June 26.

All six of the theatres scheduled to re-open are in either Edmonton or Calgary, and include Cineplex Cinemas North Edmonton and VIP, Cineplex Odeon South Edmonton Cinema, Scotiabank Theatre Edmonton, Cineplex Odeon Crowfoot Crossing Cinemas, Cineplex Odeon Sunridge Spectrum Cinemas and Cineplex Cinemas Seton and VIP.

The other 13 theatres in Alberta, including the Cineplex Odeon Grande Prairie Cinema, will re-open on July 3.

Cineplex says that all the theatres will re-open with enhanced cleaning procedures and protocols and updated physical distancing rules both inside and outside of the auditoriums.

They will also be launching reserved seating in all auditoriums across the country to ensure that physical distancing can be maintained, reducing capacity in theatres, accepting debit and credit payments only except for gift card purchases, providing hand sanitizer for guests and staff, as well as limiting food offerings to popcorn and other ‘core’ concessions.

As a ‘welcome-back’ gesture, Cineplex will also be offering $5 tickets to new releases that some might have missed in theatres, including The Invisible Man, Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, and Bad Boys for Life.

The three Alberta locations of The Rec Room, an arcade themed restaurant and lounge, are also now open, with enhanced cleaning, physical distancing guidelines, and limited menu options.

“The past three months have given us a new appreciation for the importance of friends and family and the power of shared experiences with those we love,” said Ellis Jacob, President and CEO of Cineplex, in a release. “Entertaining is what we do best, and we simply can’t wait to safely welcome guests back to our theatres and The Rec Room for some much-deserved entertainment, fun and escape.”
