Eastlink, Coca Cola Centre and outdoor pool to begin phased reopening July 6

Jun 24, 2020 | 4:08 PM

The City has announced changes to the Eastlink Centre, Coca Cola Centre, and outdoor pool as they begin a phased reopening on July 6.

The Eastlink Centre’s hours will change to being open Monday to Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and then open again in the evening from 4:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and closed on Sundays.

In the first phase of the re-opening, only 30 people per hour will be allowed in the fitness centre at Eastlink. For the aquatic areas, there will be one person per lane for the 50m and 25m pools only, and 24 people per hour with sanitization between bookings.

The Coke Centre will be open Mondays to Fridays from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., closed on Saturdays and open on Sundays. There are no drop-ins or regular programming allowed, only bookings.

Fees for the Eastlink Centre, Coca Cola Centre and the outdoor pool will also be changed and were discussed at the Community Services Committee meeting on Tuesday, June 23. The committee voted to recommend Council approve a bylaw that would change the fees to both facilities as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The changes would see a $5 drop-in fee, or $50 monthly pass for Eastlink. Passes are to be sold until August 15. Memberships will remain frozen until they are able to reopen to full capacity.

For the outdoor pool, they will no longer be accepting individual or group drop-ins.

“The typical fees that are in the City’s fees and charges bylaw probably won’t work,” said Mayor Bill Given. “Administration brought forward a recommendation to identify how groups could book the outdoor pool, and so it won’t be a model where you walk up to the pool and pay your five dollars and have an entry at the outdoor pool, it will be for group bookings.”

The new model for the outdoor pool will see it open from Monday to Thursday, 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with four, 45-minute rental slots per day for cohorts only. It will cost $100 to book one of these slots on these days, and there will be a maximum of 20 people.

For Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the pool will be open from 1:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and will have four, one-hour rental slots per day. It will cost $125 to book on these days, with the same maximum of 20 people allowed.

“These measures are intended to be temporary for a period of time while the restrictions to respond to COVID are still in place.”
