New COVID-19 case identified in Big Lakes County area

The Big Lakes County area added a new case of COVID-19 on Wednesday, as the province of Alberta added 44 new cases for June 24.

The case in Big Lakes County is the lone active case reported in the area that includes the Town of High Prairie. The one other change among Peace Country municipalities in Wednesday’s update from Alberta Health was the lone active case in Northern Sunrise County is now considered recovered.

In Alberta there are now 538 active cases of COVID-19, while 7,134 cases are considered recovered. No additional deaths were reported for Wednesday, leaving the number of fatalities attributed to the novel coronavirus at 153.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of end of day June 23 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 18 cases (All recovered)
  • County of Grande Prairie: Seven cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Greenview: Three cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 67 cases (57 recovered, ten deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 41 cases (One active, 35 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: Five cases (All recovered)
  • Northern Sunrise County: Four cases (All recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: Six cases (All recovered)
  • Clear Hills County: Ten cases (All active)
  • County of Northern Lights: Zero cases
  • Mackenzie County: 35 cases (Two active, 33 recovered)

There are now 36 people in hospital with COVID-19 in Alberta as of June 24, while seven of those individuals are in intensive care. Three people from the North Zone are in hospital with one in ICU.

There were 6,515 tests processed at the provincial lab over the last 24 hours, as nearly 410,000 tests have been completed as of June 24. 29,211 people have been tested in northern Alberta.
