Hundreds flock to Popeyes Chicken for grand opening

Jun 26, 2020 | 3:08 PM

The lineups both inside and outside of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in Grande Prairie were very long on Friday, as the Swan City’s newest restaurant held its grand opening.

People began showing up at the location in Trader Ridge just after 10:00 a.m. to wait in line for a chance to get their hands on the famed chicken.

By the time Popeyes had opened its doors to the public at 11:00 a.m. on Friday morning, there were over 100 people waiting in line to try the chicken.

The line of vehicles waiting for the drive-thru and people lined up outside continued to grow after 11:00 a.m. and stretched out on to 132 Avenue close to where the CO-OP is located.

Richard Couseau was one of the many people in line waiting. He says he’s tried Popeyes before and is a big fan.

“Popeyes is amazing, that’s why I drive to Edmonton most of the time. I’ll drive 10 hours a day to get Popeyes, I’m not kidding.”

Cheryl Forseille showed up shortly after 11:00 a.m. and says that she’s trying it for the first time after she missed her chance to try it in the past.

“We were in Las Vegas in December and we’d seen Popeyes all over the place and we did not stop. So, we regret that, so of course we have to come now because it’s in Grande Prairie.”

Marcus Fritz and his crew work across the street from the Popeyes. Fritz says that his work crew has been waiting months for the opening.

“They’ve been eyeballing this place since they broke ground here, so I’m entertaining them today and I’m going to buy them a couple buckets of chicken and celebrate their good work efforts. They (Popeyes) don’t disappoint, it’s good chicken.”

Those interested in getting Popeyes must be aware that there is currently no dine-in allowed inside the restaurant, and they are only open for take out orders and drive thru due to COVID-19.

The Popeyes location in Grande Prairie says that the store will eventually expand to food delivery apps like SkipTheDishes in the coming months, once the location has been open up for a while.
