County of Grande Prairie’s Kids Can Catch Event set to return July 8

Jun 28, 2020 | 7:00 AM

The County of Grande Prairie’s Kids Can Catch Event is retuning for it’s third consecutive year on July 8.

The event takes place at the County Sportsplex Pond (7407-108 Street Clairmont) and encourages families with kids under the age of 16 to sign-up for the event where their kids can learn how to fish for free.

Nora-Lee Gilkyson, the Recreation Coordinator for County of Grande Prairie, says that this event is very popular within the community.

“Usually every year the events been full. The first year we had around 30 kids, last year we had close to 85 people attend the event and this year we are looking at capping it at 45 (people), just with the new COVID restrictions, just to make sure everything is properly sanitized and we don’t have too many people there at one time.”

Families that are interested in signing their kids up for the event can do so here. The sessions are in 45-minute time slots and last until 8:00 p.m.

Experienced fishers and volunteers within the community will also be on hand to help kids out that are learning how to fish. Kids will also learn about the importance of fishing conservation and responsible angling while attending their course.

Gilkyson says that the lake is safe to fish in and it’s recently been stocked.

“We stocked that pond with 2000 rainbow trout on May 12, so it’s a project with the Alberta Conservation Association, it’s the third year that they’ve stocked that pond.”

Those who catch a fish cannot keep the fish as it is they are located in a storm pond.

The County has also implemented several strict COVID-19 guidelines to keep the public safe:

  • Do not arrive more than 15 minutes before your scheduled time.
  • Quickly exit the venue once your time slot is complete.
  • Maintain Physical distancing of 2 m at all times with those outside your cohort (this will limit # of persons allowed on docks).

The County says that hand sanitizer will be on location and normal fishing regulations still apply.

In the event of bad weather, the event could be cancelled.
