Townes, Goodvin, Cardinal up for JUNO awards Monday

Three Peace Country musicians will wait to see if their name is called as the 2020 Juno Awards’ are set to be presented virtually Monday evening.

Country star and Grande Prairie native Tenille Townes is up for two awards, including Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year for her songs I Kept the Roses, Jersey on the Wall and White Horse, while Spirit River native Aaron Goodvin is up for Country Album of the Year for his album V. Grande Prairie’s Celeigh Cardinal is also nominated for Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year, following the release of her album Stories from a Downtown Apartment.

It’s a second chance for the Junos ceremony after the original televised broadcast in Saskatoon was cancelled in March amid the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Junos organizers decided to combine two nights of industry accolades into one truncated show they say will run about 90 minutes, with performances by musicians Iskwe, Neon Dreams and the Dead South.

Also performing is this year’s leading nominee, pop singer Alessia Cara, who was booked as host for the original ceremony before it was scrapped. She has six nods in categories that include pop album, artist of the year and single of the year.

Rapper Tory Lanez trails closely behind Cara with five nominations, while pianist Alexandra Streliski, Bryan Adams, Bulow, Nav, Loud Luxury and Shawn Mendes, have three each.

The 49^th edition of the annual awards show will be streamed on CBC Gem beginning at 5 p.m. mountain time.
