Jun 30, 2020 | 7:28 AM

UPDATE (4:25 p.m. June 30): The severe thunderstorm watch for all previously indicated areas has been lifted. A rainfall warning remains in effect for the Grande Prairie-Beaverlodge-Valleyview area, as well as the Grande Cache-Hinton and Whitecourt-Edson-Fox Creek-Swan Hills areas.

UPDATE (10:55 a.m. June 30): Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch on top of the rainfall warning for the Grande Prairie area. The weather office says conditions are favourable for thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon that could be capable of producing large hail and heavy rains.

“Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.”

The severe thunderstorm watch is in place for the Grande Prairie-Beaverlodge-Valleyview area, as well as the Peace River, Fairview, High Prairie and High Level areas.

A rainfall warning has been issued for the City and County of Grande Prairie, as well as the Municipal District of Greenview.

The areas under the rainfall warning include The City of Grande Prairie, Beaverlodge, Hythe, Demmitt, Wembley Sexsmith and La Glace. DeBolt, Little Smoky, O’Brien Provincial Park, Big Mountain Creek, Sturgeon Lake, Valleyview, New Fish Creek, Wapiti and Shuttler Flats Recreation Area, which are all located within the MD of Greenview, are also included in this warning.

Environment and Climate Change Canada says heavy rain is expected to begin Tuesday night, and continue to fall all the way through Thursday evening. By the time the rain tapers off, between 50 and 70 mm is expected to fall, though some areas may see amounts closer to 90 mm.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods, as well as localized flooding in low-lying areas.

The rain may also accumulate in pools on the roads, and motorists are asked to exercise caution when behind the wheel.
