UPDATE: Weather advisory ended in Grande Prairie area

UPDATE (July 2, 6:04 p.m.): The weather advisory in place for the Grande Prairie-Beaverlodge-Valleyview area, as well as Fox Creek-Whitecourt-edson area has been lifted by Environment and Climate Chnage Canada.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) says conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds in the Grande Prairie area Thursday.

The weather office says the development of such clouds is possible for the Grande Prairie-Beaverlodge-Valleyview area, due to weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms.

“This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.”

Funnel clouds could also develop in the Whitecourt-Edson-Fox Creek area, as well as the Slave Lake area.

ECCC add that these types of funnel clouds develop with very little warning, and if you spot a one to prepare to take shelter.

A small funnel cloud was spotted over Grande Prairie back on Sunday afternoon, though it never touched down.

In addition to the special weather advisory for the Grande Prairie area, a severe thunderstorm watch is also in place for areas north of the Swan City, including Peace River, Fairview, High Prairie, Manning and High Level.
