City of Grande Prairie partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters to provide free swimming to over 1200 kids

Jul 3, 2020 | 5:30 AM

The City of Grande Prairie and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Grande Prairie and Area have teamed up to announce a new partnership that will allow over 1200 kids and parents to visit the Grande Prairie Outdoor Pool this summer at no cost.

The partnership between the two is funded by the Don Gilles Legacy Fund, which provides annual funding for aquatics or senior programs.

Grande Prairie Mayor, Bill Given says this partnership is important for the City.

“Council has always wanted our community to have access to great recreation amenities because of the benefits active lifestyles deliver for the individual and for our broader community. This partnership is an important step forward in creating an opportunity for kids and families to access our new Outdoor Pool, without income being a limiting factor.”

Those involved with local non-profits, charities and community groups will have access to use the pool.

Time slots will be available from Monday to Thursday between 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Connie Patterson with Big Brothers Big Sisters in Grande Prairie says she’s thankful for this partnership with the city.

“Big Brothers Big Sisters strives to teach the youth in our programs the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle, and this partnership acts on that goal. 2020 has been a difficult year for everyone, we sincerely thank the City of Grande Prairie and the Don Gillies Legacy Fund for helping to bring summertime fun and recreation to the youth in our area.”

Those who do access the program will be able to have access swimming suits, towels and treats thanks to a partnership with Hunt Group with IG Private Wealth Management.
