Enforcement Services to focus on construction zone safety throughout July

Jul 3, 2020 | 11:26 AM

With construction season in full swing in Grande Prairie, the City of Grande Prairie’s Enforcement Services will spend the month of July concentrating on road safety within construction zones as a part of it’s Selected Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP).

Sargeant Ross Gear with Enforcement Services says that they want to make sure motorists are being educated about the importance of safe driving within a construction zone.

“Anybody who’s driven through Grande Prairie knows that there’s construction going on all over the place, so its kind of fitting that it’s this month’s step. The main things we want people to be aware of and keep in mind is our construction crews are out there trying to fix up our roads and a lot of times they are concentrating on their jobs. It’s up to motorists to make sure you are going slow and you are taking their (the workers) safety into account.”

“If somebody who is on a construction crew happens to step out into a roadway, make sure you are going slow enough so you are able to stop. We just want to make sure that these construction workers are safe. That’s why the speed zones are the way they are, because we want these workers to be safe.”

Most construction zones have a reduced speed limit, and those that are caught driving over the construction zone speed limit could face a hefty fine. Speeding fines in construction zones are double from what they would normally be for speeding on a regular road.

Motorists are also being reminded that as long as the construction signs are up on the road and visible to the driver, the construction zone remains in effect.

Gear says by slowing down and paying close attention to your surroundings, it will reduce the risk of a collision in a construction zone.
