New La Glace fire hall officially operational

The new La Glace fire hall is officially operational after responding to its first call for service.

The new fire hall received it’s first emergency phone call in the last weekend of June after a structure fire started at an oilfield compressor station shortly after a power pole was struck by lightning on Range Road 90 near Township Road 750.

Equipment began moving into the facility in mid-June after almost a year worth of delays. The new facility cost $2 million and employs 13 firefighters.

District Fire Chief Dale Widsten says they’re excited for the fire hall to open up.

“We had outgrown our former space with adjustments in service delivery, changes in equipment design and increased personnel. This building offers much more flexibility. We look forward to welcoming residents to visit once COVID-19 precautions are further relaxed.”

The new facility also includes dedicated training spaces, public education, meeting and maintenance spaces, offices, as well as equipment and extra storage space.

In addition to the new fire hall, the facility will be getting a new custom fire engine in 2021 that will replace the 15-year-old truck that is currently in operation.
