Valleyview RCMP warn of phone scam quickly making rounds

Jul 8, 2020 | 12:01 PM

The Valleyview RCMP say they received 40-plus reports just on Tuesday, July 7 alone from residents in the area saying that they received a phone call from individuals telling them that their “social security numbers” are being used for drug activity in Toronto.

The suspects are then asking the victims to press a number to speak with an investigator.

RCMP says that the likely goal of these phone calls is so the suspect can attempt to obtain personal and banking information from the victim.

RCMP are reminding residents to follow several safety tips when it comes to dealing with a phone call you believe to be a scam:

  • Anyone receiving a call from someone claiming their personal information has been compromised should take note of the information and disconnect from the call.
  • Do not share any personal information with the caller, such as confirming name, social insurance number, and address.
  • Anyone with legitimate concerns regarding personal information being compromised should find the government agency’s phone number through a trusted source (official website) and contact them directly.
  • The best protection from scammers is to learn how to resist being pushed into a decision regardless of how persuasive or aggressive the caller may be.

Anyone with information about this scam is asked to report it to Valleyview RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
