Pedestrian-only downtown a hit with residents as St. John’s adapts to pandemic

Jul 11, 2020 | 5:05 AM

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — The City of St. John’s has closed its main downtown street to vehicles this summer, a popular move among residents and business owners.

Hundreds of people were out on Water Street in Newfoundland and Labrador’s capital for an evening stroll earlier this week.

The city announced the pedestrian mall would go ahead from July to early September, encouraging people to visit the downtown street that had been adapted for physical distancing and outdoor dining.

There is one active case of COVID-19 in the province and many restrictions on businesses and gatherings have been lifted over the last month.

Finance Minister Tom Osborne visited the pedestrian mall for a meal Wednesday and said he’d like to see it continue past this year.

St. John’s is one of many cities in Canada making changes to public spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic to allow more people outside safely.
