Investigation underway into weekend fires at Grande Prairie mobile homes

The Grande Prairie RCMP have joined in on the investigation into the cause of two fires over the weekend that left two mobile homes uninhabitable.

Grande Prairie Fire Department Crews responded to a call of a structure fire at approximately 8:10 p.m. on Friday, July 10. Upon arrival at the scene at the Meadow View Mobile Home Park, crews discovered a home on fire, and extinguished the blaze. The damage was limited, though it did cause some exposure damage to the home located to it’s south.

Then, at approximately 5 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, crews were called back to the same location, and discovered the same mobile home was on fire again, along with the home next to it.

Leann Johnson, a Fire Prevention Officer with the Grande Prairie Fire Department, says after the second blaze, both homes are considered uninhabitable. They were both fully involved in the blaze and suffered extensive damage, while the home to the west suffered some minor damage, with partially melted siding.

Johnson says there were no injuries related to these fires.

“At the time of the fire, there was no one home. The smoke alarms were not an affect of their successful evacuation, because there was nobody home. But we still encourage GP residents to have working smoke alarms, because in the event of a fire, even a neighbour could hear the alarm and alert the fire department.”

She does say, however, that this fire has cost some people their homes.

“We have five people that have been displaced due to these fires between the two mobile homes. A family of three, and a single family dwelling with a tenant.”

Johnson says there’s no estimated costs of the damage at this time, but does say both mobile homes are a complete loss, as are all of the contents of the homes.

The Fire Department has deemed the origin of the fire as ‘undetermined,’ and the RCMP have become involved in the investigation.

Anyone with information on the cause of the fires, or who witnessed any suspicious persons or activity in the area around the time of the fires is asked to contact the Grande Prairie RCMP at 780-830-5701.
