City of Grande Prairie unveils Heritage Day celebration plans

Jul 22, 2020 | 5:30 AM

Heritage Day celebrations at the Grande Prairie Museum and Muskoseepi Park will go ahead as scheduled this summer despite COVID-19.

For the 46th straight year celebrations are taking place in various cities throughout Alberta. This year, the celebrations are being held in the Swan City on August 3 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

It will feature various different activities for attendees to participate in, including historical and live art demonstrations, musical performances, and food trucks that will all be taking place down at the Grande Prairie Museum and Muskoseepi Park.

Throughout the day on Monday, the Heritage Village, located inside the Grande Prairie Museum, will be showcasing live historical demonstrations known as Heritage Hunters.

The Heritage Hunters part of the event is free to attend, however residents interested in attending are asked to register for a time slot in advance, so physical distancing rules can be followed. Each time slot for Heritage Hunters is 50 minutes and will have a maximum of 50 people per session.

The city says that it will also unveil a new feature at the village, as well as have a traditional 1920’s saxophone performance and performances from the Hula Hoop Circus.

Meanwhile, near the amphitheater in Muskoseepi Park, local artists will be creating custom artwork based on the festivals three themes this year, which were chosen by members of the community:

  • Grande Prairie through the ages
  • Historical buildings in the region
  • The meaning of Muskoseepi

The artists will be creating their pieces of art from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and once completed, the artwork will be displayed inside the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion year-round.

The city is still taking applications for local artists who are interested in participating in the event. Those interested in participating in the art demonstrations have until July 27 to submit an application. Each artist that participates will be supplied with acrylic paint and a canvas. They will also receive a $100 remuneration.

Artists that are interested in signing up must email the city (programming@cityofgp.com) by Monday, July 27 with their theme selection and pictures of two original art pieces. All applicants that apply will be reviewed and selected by a panel.

Finally, just like Canada Day, the City has partnered with the Grande Prairie Regional Tourism Association to create a Heritage Day themed scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt will be operated through an interactive app and the city encourages residents to take part in it.

The scavenger hunt begins on July 27 and runs until August 3. Details are still being finalized and more information about the hunt can be found at the city’s website.
