City of Grande Prairie receives $26,000 donation to support homeless initiatives

The City of Grande Prairie has received a $26,000 donation from the Canadian Medical Association Foundation (CMAF), which will go to helping those experiencing homelessness in the Swan City.

The funds will come from the COVID-19 Community Response Fund for Vulnerable Populations, which is a collaboration between the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the CMAF.

Community Social Development Manager with the City Angela Sutherland says this fund was born out of the need to support the most vulnerable at the local level.

“They were very generous in granting us funds that can be directly administered to municipalities, as we are the ones that are on the front lines since the beginning of this pandemic,” said Sutherland. “We’re looking forward to allocating this funding to help our most vulnerable.”

Donations from this fund were given out to municipalities around Canada and will complement funding from existing federal homelessness programs.

Sutherland says the donation serves as great recognition of the work communities like Grande Prairie are doing to serve the street-engaged population during this pandemic.

“Through this whole COVID-19 response, it’s important to recognize the need to strengthen the social sector, and that there needs to be funds directed towards our vulnerable people.”

“I want to thank the CMAF for this donation.”
