Two advisories for Sturgeon Lake

Jul 31, 2020 | 10:33 PM

Alberta Health Services has issued two advisories for Sturgeon Lake.

The first is a water quality advisory for the water at Williamson Provincial Park because of what AHS describes in a release as “elevated levels of fecal matter.”

AHS says effective immediately, people should not swim or wade in that water.

Health experts say contact with the water could lead to gastrointestinal illnesses, and skin, ear, and eye infections.

Anyone who does come into contact with the water should wash their hands and not touch their face or mouth.

The second advisory is for a blue-green algae bloom found on Sturgeon Lake near both Williamson and Young’s Point Provincial Parks.

AHS says in another release that residents and visitors should avoid all contact with the blooms, should not swim or wade in the water or allow their pets to do likewise, not feed fish or fish trimmings to their pets, and limit their own consumption of fish and fish trimmings.

That release also says people who ingest this water or come in contact with it, might have skin irritation, a rash, sore throat, sore red eyes, fever, and diarrhea or vomiting.

AHS adds children can have more pronounced symptoms.

These things can appear in an hour or two and disappear in a day or two.
