Hinshaw encouraged as province adds under 100 daily cases each day over weekend

There were five new cases of COVID-19 identified in the City of Grande Prairie over the last four days, as the province saw less than 100 new ones each day between Friday and Monday.

The province added 97 new cases on July 31, 67 on August 1, 74 on August 2 and 65 on August 3.

This is something the Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, is very encouraged by.

“Two weeks ago, I called our numbers a wake-up call. Today, we are starting to see the result of Albertans answering that challenge.”

Of those new cases, two were identified in the County of Grande Prairie in addition to the five in the City. Also, both Clear Hills County and the MD of Fairview area saw their active case total drop to zero.

Updated case numbers among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day August 3 are as follows:

• City of Grande Prairie: 38 cases (Ten active, 28 recovered)
• County of Grande Prairie: 23 cases (Four active, 19 recovered)
• M.D. of Greenview: Eight cases (Five active, three recovered)
• Birch Hills County: Two cases (Both recovered)
• M.D. of Spirit River: Three cases (Two active, one recovered)
• M.D. of Smoky River: 73 cases (One active, 62 recovered, ten deaths)
• Big Lakes County: 47 cases (42 recovered, five deaths)
• M.D. of Lesser Slave River: Five cases (All recovered)
• M.D. of Peace: Seven cases (One active, six recovered)
• M.D. of Fairview: Two Cases (All recovered)
• Clear Hills County: 24 cases (All recovered)
• Northern Sunrise County: Four cases (All recovered)
• County of Northern Lights: Five cases (One active, four recovered)
• Mackenzie County: 167 cases (57 active, 109 recovered, one death)

Active case totals dropped by nearly 200 since Thursday in Alberta, as there are now 1,191 active cases. A total of 9,754 people are considered recovered.

“We still have a long way to go, but these are encouraging signs,” said Hinshaw. “They remind us that we are not powerless in this fight and that working together, we can limit the spread across Alberta.”

There were five more deaths in the province over the long weekend, bringing the COVID-19 death toll to 201 in Alberta.

Hospitalizations sit at 85 as of August 3, while ICU admissions have increased to 23 in the province. In the North Zone, 11 people are in hospital with three in intensive care.

There were nearly 35,000 tests processed between Friday and Monday, bringing the number of tests completed to 720,131 in Alberta. 50,341 people from northern Alberta have been tested as of August 3.
