Thunderstorm Watch

Severe thunderstorm watch in place for Grande Prairie, Peace River areas

Aug 6, 2020 | 1:35 PM

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the Grande Prairie area Thursday by Environment Canada, as they say conditions are favourable for “dangerous” thunderstorms that could bring damaging hail, heavy rain and strong wind gusts.

The watch extends west to the B.C. border to include Beaverlodge and east to Valleyview. It also extends north to include Peace River, Fairview, High Prairie and Manning. It also includes Fox Creek and Whitecourt.

“Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.”

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall. Watches are upgraded to warnings when a storm becomes imminent.
