ASAA to decide soon on fall high school sports season

The fate of the fall high school sports season will be decided within the next week.

On Tuesday, the Alberta School Athletics Association (ASAA) Executive Committee met to discuss the upcoming seasons of play for fall sports.

The ASAA says that the currently scheduled start dates for golf, cross country, and football (August 16) are under review, with a decision to be announced on or before August 11 following consultation with zones and key stakeholders.

“Please note that any directives provided by the ASAA are subject to change as new information becomes available, and schools must always ensure their activities are in compliance with local school district and provincial health guidelines which may be more restrictive than ASAA policy,” the association said in a statement.

In April, the ASAA cancelled the remainder of the 2019-20 high school sports schedule, including all remaining provincial championsips, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On July 21, the provincial government announced that Alberta students would be back in classrooms for the start of the 2020-21 school year under “near normal conditions” with additional health and safety measures in place.

On Tuesday, the province said masks will be mandatory in all common areas for all students in grades 4-12, as well as for school staff and bus drivers.
