Conservative leader race “far tighter than people would believe,” says Warkentin

Aug 9, 2020 | 7:00 AM

Voting in the Conservative Party of Canada’s leadership race is open until August 21.

Grande Mackenzie MP Chris Warkentin says pandemic restrictions have meant challenges.

“I guess most of it having been undertaken online and through other mechanisms that allow for the required social distancing. It has been an interesting race, there have been a lot of different things that have developed, and the membership does have a difficult decision to make.”

Warkentin thinks the race between Leslyn Lewis, Peter MacKay, Erin O’Toole and Derek Sloan is “far tighter than some would believe.”

“The membership has gotten to know a lot of the ideas that have been presented and, quite frankly, I wouldn’t be ready to bet that any particular candidate would win.”

The vote is being done using a mail-in, ranked ballot.

Warkentin says that because he is part of the leadership team for the Conservative caucus, he is not allowed to publicly say he who he is supporting.
