County of Grande Prairie discontinues County Connector transit service

Aug 10, 2020 | 3:33 PM

County Council has voted to discontinue the County Connector public transit pilot project.

The County Connector service linked Clairmont, Sexsmith, Beaverlodge, Wembley, and Hythe to the City of Grande Prairie, but was suspended in April due to COVID-19.

Reeve Leanne Beaupre says it wasn’t worth continuing to operate the service because of the lack of ridership on the shuttle.

“Our decision to discontinue the service was due to consistently low ridership,” said Beaupre. “It also reflects the County’s commitment to being fiscally responsible with taxpayer dollars and government funding.”

“We sincerely appreciate the support from the provincial government for this pilot and the collaboration we have had with our neighbours. We will continue to look at options that will meet the needs of the community while being fiscally responsible.”

County Council says that prior to Monday’s decision, municipalities and the provincial government were informed about the plan to discontinue the service.

Municipalities will see no additional costs for discontinuation of the project.
